The Steam Boiler Problem and the evolution of Ca

Last week, my co-supervisor gave me the Steam Boiler Moot point. It’s a classical point in dispute for specifications languages. You have a computer monitoring a steam boiler: a cyclops tank of wet with a heat origin and a steam pipe at the top. There are wet pumps to mastery—to add more water into the reservoir—and a series of sensors. Essentially, given compound specifications, you have to get the steam boiler into a functioning case and keep it that way. Sensors can flinch malfunctioning, too, to bring into being it more difficult.

It’s a serviceable problem because it enforced me to look at how Ca is to operate with in the flesh, in a mixed example. Even though I’m not done, the inference is that it needs a lot of syntactic sweeten built on top of it.

Some of them are rather exterior, if time-consuming. For model, currently patterns cannot overlap at all in Ca, so something analogous:

Is not allowed, though it positively should be. I had no idea before now how irritating it is not having that lineament. There are other minor syntax features of a piece that that need to be addressed.

The more pleasing case is what to do with the catamorphisms. Theoretically they act fine, almost. In wont, they’re a bit burdensome. When I said “almost” before, I meant they worked comminuted up to Loïc Colson’s distinguished inférieur (”least part”) question. It pertains to aboriginal recursive schemes analogous the one I’m laboring with, were writing the “least part function”—discovery the minimum of two values—has greater duration complexity than in an unlimited free computational pattern.

What this boils down to in my soul is the inability to bring about a catamorphism over two objects simultaneously. Or settled in a more Haskell-ish way, there’s no effectual way to write the zip discharge.
