Victoriana - Modern Victorian novels

There’s nowt similar a Victorian novel for a meaty peruse. There’s the ideally real Victorian writers - I’m not a fan of Charles The devil, but love George Eliot and Thomas Manly. But in recent spells you’ve got another selection - the modern Victorian (or neo-Victorian) strange. These books pull along on the Victorian storytelling traditon and settings, adding present concerns and perspectives.

I’m popularly engrossed in The Diary of Dora Detriment. It tells the chronicle of Dora, alive in Lambeth, London, in the year 1859. Her bookbinder married man has arthritic hands, her daughter suffers from falling sickness and our plucky supremely courageous woman finds herself illegally bandage expensive volumes of pornography commissioned by aristocrats in regular arrangement to keep her family menstrum.

Spite - or perhaps because of - its setting, The Diary of Dora Hurt is an unashamedly novel novel, whose themes seem equitable as relevant today, and which seeks to establish A.N. Wilson’s asseveration that we are all still living in the Victorian age. 

The themes of the late Victorian novels are sex, the authorial spoken sound, the role of women, release and freedom, saneness/insanity, ableness, suffering, want, courage - it is no awe that can enrapture readers with such ideas to pull upon. It is worth noting too that women are often the principal characters in these books.
