The Window Fan

It's hot in Pittsburgh today -- 85 degrees and moist, too. This prompted me to do something I don't often do: move round on the air conditioning.

In most cases, I prefer the caloric and humidity over the demulcent hum of the air-conditioning one that pumps somewhat cold air into houses shuttered up rightful as they were in the thick of winter.

For years in Pittsburgh and many other cities -- as a thick caloric settled over the horizon construction sleeping unachievable -- whole families carried blankets and inactive bags down to the stream shore, where the air was cooler. Hundreds of families and family spread out joined together by a single need to doze, but in the process they were completely engaged with the caloric and the cool and were driven to be with each other.
 
Positive, I know, air conditioning certainly has its useful points -- it is the discursive power folks are quick to move down south, and conditioned air has kept people with breathing terms alive who otherwise would go through mightily during thick caloric spells.

It's a comparatively recent introduction of novelty, too. It was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier in 1902 initially for productive applications. It wasn't until 1924 that it was applied to belonging to man comfort. And it was many more years after that that it became hackneyed in homes across America. When I was a kid in the '70s-- before air conditioning was affordable to most persons -- my male parent was a master a ropes of a ship up a series of fans in the domicile to bring the a little cold evening air interior and pump the hot, fusty air up through the attic fan.

And as I lay down at darkness to sleep, I could perceive by the ear a whole world superficies, intermingled with the hum of the fans -- the whole of a baby lamenting, a motorcycle down-shifting on some faraway rising ground,...
