Untuk memahami proses analisa dengan lebih baik, bebrapa terminologi dasar harus dipahami terlebih dahulu.

Entire Carbon (TC) – semua karbon di dalam sampel, termasuk inorganik dan organik karbon

Entire Inorganic Carbon (TIC) – sering dianggap sebagai unorganized carbon (IC), karbonat, bikarbonat, dan karbon dioksida terlarut; suatu physical diperoleh dari sumber non-hidup.

Entire Organic Carbon (TOC) – corporeal yang berasal dari pembusukan tanaman, pertumbuhan bakteri, dan aktivitas metabolikdari organisme hidup atau bahan kimia.

Non-Purgeable Fundamental Carbon (NPOC) – bisa dianggap sebagai TOC; karbon organik yang ada di dalam sampel yang diasamkan setelah sampel dicuci dengan gas.

Purgeable (vaporable) Organic Carbon (POC) – karbon organik yang telah dihilangkan dari netral, atau sampel yang diasamkan dengan mencuci dengan gas lifeless. Ini merupakan senyawa yang sama dengan Vaporable Organic Compounds (VOC) dan biasa ditentukan oleh Free from impurity and Trap Gas Chromatography.

Dissolved Fundamental Carbon (DOC) – karbon organik yang ada dalam sampel setelah sampel di filtrasi, biasanya menggunakan strain 0.45 micrometer.

Pendulous Organic Carbon – also called particulate constitutional carbon (PtOC); the carbon in particulate figure that is too large to go through a filter.

Since all TOC analyzers only in fact measure whole carbon, TOC decomposition always requires some accounting for the unorganized carbon that is always not away. One analysis technique involves a two-platform process commonly referred to as TC-IC. It measures the amount of inanimate carbon (IC) evolved from an acidified aliquot of a specimen and also the amount of total carbon (TC) at hand in the sample. TOC is calculated by deduction of the IC value from the TC the instance. Another variant employs acidification of the instance to evolve carbon sub-oxide and measuring it as inanimate carbon (IC), then oxidizing and measuring the remaining non-purgeable constitutional carbon (NPOC). This is called TIC-NPOC decomposition. A more common means directly measures TOC in the exemplification by again acidifying the specimen it to a pH value of two or less to extricate the IC gas but in this case to the air not for mensuration. The remaining non-purgeable CO2 gas (NPOC)contained in the fluid aliquot is then oxidized releasing the gases. These gases are then sent to the detector for mensuration.
