Salt of the World
Here at Gardner-Webb Seminary of learning we have been experimenting with common salt for about 2 semesters. After a few firings we began to heed a pattern; only a few spots in the kiln were acquisition sufficient amounts of chloride of sodium. The kiln that we use is a gas kiln and has never had much degree of density. There have only been a small count of pots to advance out of that kiln with the intended hue and texture.
Earthen ware takes wont and when you begin to hound it seriously, you perform just how much frequent repetition it takes. Not only can one prepetually improve throwing techniques, there is an unlimited list of furnish with glass possibilities and kindling techniques. This riddle with the kiln may right mean that we emergency more practice kindling. Maybe we reasonable need to get to a sharp end where we can read the kiln and comprehend exactly how much hotter or cooler it of necessity to be at any given sharp end. But what if that is not the case. What if it is not us but the kiln that is flawed.
Gas kilns are much more involved than electric kilns. With electric kilns, you can program the setting on fire and then leave it alone all darkness and go to sleep. With gas kilns, everything is by the hand. If you have to fire a load for 16 hours then you have to be there for all of those 16 hours. The point to be solved is, if you spend 16 hours of your week attention a kiln, you default your pots to tend hitherward out incredible…this is not always the covering. So my question is, is it more masterly to work in fact hard and get one ample pot out of a gas kiln than not laboring so hard and acquirement a lot of great pots from an electric kiln? Who knows? But you cannot make open up an electric kiln and let flow pound after beat of salt in. Since muriate of soda is what we are going for, I suspect gas is the only way to get there for now.
