Thumbs down on Paragon kilns

As I’ve discussed before, Paragon kilns do not come after the National Electrical Digest (NEC) on the plugs that are used on their kilns. For archetype, their Bluebird kiln draws 14 amps, Paragon states the kiln requires a 20 amp dedicated circular course, but, believe it or not, they use a banner 15 amp stopple.

Here’s an e-defensive covering conversation I had with Arnold Howard of Paragon:

I am handwriting to you today to bear to your attention an outlet that concerns me as a someone who is deeply biassed in safety in the glassworking workshop. Recently, on several of the glassworking forums, issues have approach up relating to race continually blowing revolution breakers and fuses when running their kilns. Naturally, I began to do some investigation and found that a large tell off of kilns that are to be turned to account in the US, provided by your collection and others, do not meet the requirements of the US Public Electrical Collection of laws, sections 210.21 and 210.23.

I am to a great depth concerned that your assembly is selling 120 volt kilns that tug 14 amps and are wired with a 5-15 stopple (I’ll memorandum for the record that a lot of your 240 volt kilns are also using the unfair plug). This violates NEC — the specific plug you should be using is the 5-20. I found many examples of not only wrongful plugs on your kilns, but also inexact circuit rock-broken surge recommendations — more than one of your kilns pull 20 amps, you have a 20 amp stopper and recommend a 20 amp circular course breaker. NEC calls for a 80% derating on all plugs and revolution breakers under 210.21 and 210.23.

I name from NEC 2008:

“210.23 Permissible Loads
(1) Small rope-and-Plug-Associated Equipment Not Fastened in Open space
The rating of any one line-and-plug-joined utilization furniture not fastened in broad way shall not go beyond 80 percent of the shoot-circuit amperage rating.”

Of the about 46 kilns on your website, only 10 had the make right plugs and circular course breaker recommendations.

I certainly make out the desire to have a kiln that will stopple into a 15 amp rated repository, however, in order to do that, the kiln can haul no more than 12 amps, not the 14 or more that you commonly manufacture.
