GE and the Death of Manufacturing

Is it the end of an era? Or is the era already over?

When the Wall Highway Journal first reported Of the whole Electric was leaving the application business, it seemed a powerful metaphor for the condition of American manufacturing and Catholic Electric’s role in it.

The American-made application business has been in tumult for decades, with product moving offshore and fire-brand names swapping hands. At GE’s practice headquarters in Louisville, Ky., the call over of employees surged to 23,000 in the 1970s. Today it employs 5,000.

Quantity Journal: What is GE’s character in the appliance business?

John Jowers: GE is the only circle out there today that was one of the aboriginal appliance manufacturers, so that speaks volumes straight there. There is no other brand name that has been out there as drawn out as GE. Frigidaire is still out there, but they have been bought and sold so many seasons.

GE is the only company that has maintained their own incorporated structure throughout decades of exercise manufacturing. GE today as far as I am concerned has one highest fire-brand recognitions in the use industry.

DJ: It sounds resembling there is less to distinguish brands now. Will a opportunity to sell to an overseas buyer have an shock on the reputation of GE application?

JJ: Everybody is doing the same creature, so I can’t sit here and pierce on GE. Everybody out there today manufactures expedients with planned obsolescence in seven years, aim that in seven years they chart to discontinue fabrication parts. We are now a throwaway social sympathy and that is not how the appliance activity began.
