(Review) Solio: Portable Solar Energy

Last summer, I went on a fishing/camping dance to Lac Chigoubiche in mid-boreal Quebec, rightful below Baie James. Useless to say, we had electronics–a GPS, GMRS and CB radios, and iPod–but were hundreds of kilometres from the nearest electrical egress. So, I ordered a Solio.

It has become a profitable–and fun–tool for technology. The Solio is essentially a battery bundle attached to three concordat solar panels. The battery can (and should) be charged from a wall adaptor if it’s going to be out of the sun for extended periods of duration. Once the Solio is full, you should be good to charge most of your devices with one of the election of so-called “nibs”, which are verily adaptors for diverse devices, that ship with the Solio. I was gay to see that it shipped with a USB (shift mini and entertainer types) but floored to see the inclusion of a 12V car cigarette lighter adaptor! I also use a Telus Mike (Nextel in the USA) honey-combed phone, using Motorola iDEN handsets with a non-streamer Motorola connector. I was adroit to order an iDEN “nib” to freight my unusual phone.

The Solio ships with a suction cup which I have found performs in want unless the surfaces are as unproductive as an operating playhouse. Still, it does suspend on to the Solio well. However, as most cars windows are coated ultraviolet-blocking corporeal,attaching it to the interior part of your car’s windshield will restore (or eliminate) the efficiency of charging it in your car.
